What to Expect

As we celebrate three years of building our community here in Chiang Mai, it is worth examining the very systems many of us chose to leave behind. Join us for an evening of deep inquiry into the modern paradox of success, security, and stagnation.
Co-facilitated by Dr. Stefan Ručman and Philip
The Provocation: Consider the highly celebrated "European career path" circulating recently in cultural discussions:

18 to 25: Bachelor's, Master's, unpaid internships, Erasmus trips.
28: First well-paid job at €1,200/month.
29 to 32: Second Master's, moving out of the parents' house, getting an online MBA.
33: A highly secure job at €1,600/month where you can never be fired.
67: Retire with a €650/month pension.
We are told this is a paradise of safety and enlightenment. But is a system that demands a decade of higher education only to yield a lifetime of financial dependency actually a trap?
The Core Inquiry: In this session, we will move beyond simple economic complaints and use the Socratic method to examine the philosophy underlying this timeline. We will explore the tension between the illusion of safety and the necessity of risk.
We will structure our dialogue around the concept of antifragility. The European model attempts to eliminate all volatility (you can never be fired, you are shielded by regulations), but in doing so, does it make the individual highly fragile to economic reality?
Questions for Dialogue:

The Illusion of Safety: Does a system that guarantees you cannot be fired actually rob you of your personal agency and drive?
Credentials vs. Competence: Have endless degrees and certificates ("Sustainability Leadership") replaced actual wealth creation and sturdiness?
Via Negativa: Can we achieve a better, more robust life by subtracting these societal expectations rather than constantly adding new credentials?
Intentionality: For those of us who have opted out and chosen to build our roots in places like Chiang Mai, how do we ensure we are building true, sturdy independence and not just escaping a broken system?
The Format: As always with our Socrates Café, this is not a debate to be won. It is a collaborative inquiry. We will practice active listening, challenge our own assumptions, and seek a deeper understanding of what constitutes a truly prosperous life.
