What to Expect

2 NIGHTS! MARCH 18 & 19 – 🎷 Seoul Quartet with Warit Techakanont 🎹

For two special nights, Seoul Quartet comes to Smalls.

This ensemble brings together three key voices from Seoul’s modern jazz and improvisation scene — musicians active at clubs like Evans Jazz Club and across Korea’s contemporary circuit — now joined by Bangkok’s own Warit Techakanont, who has previously performed with them in Seoul. What began there now continues here.
Expect modern jazz language, open improvisation, and cross-cultural dialogue built on listening and risk.

🎷 Junpyo Hong – Saxophone
A Seoul-based saxophonist and composer active in Korea’s jazz and improvised music scene. Junpyo performs regularly in Seoul clubs including Evans and works in both structured compositions and freer contexts. His playing balances melodic clarity with exploratory phrasing, rooted in tradition yet comfortable in abstraction.

🎸 Wontae Lee – Guitar
Guitarist Lee Wontae moves between Seoul and Amsterdam, bringing European harmonic influence into Korean contemporary jazz. His original music blends impressionistic harmony with modern rhythmic sensibility, and he is known for leading his own quartet projects while collaborating widely across Seoul’s live scene.

🥁 Eunmaru Yi – Drums
An emerging force in Korea’s jazz and free improvisation world, Eunmaru brings textural sensitivity and rhythmic depth to small-group settings. Active in recordings and live collaborations across Seoul, his drumming moves fluidly between groove, abstraction, and dynamic interplay.

And from Bangkok:

🎹 Warit Techakanont – Piano
A familiar presence at Smalls and one of Thailand’s most prolific jazz voices, Warit is a pianist, composer, and educator known for bold improvisation and harmonic sophistication. Winner of 1st Prize (Jazz Category) at the Rubato International Piano Competition, with more than 30 albums and numerous EPs and singles released, Warit bridges structure and spontaneity effortlessly. His collaboration with Seoul Quartet in Korea now comes full circle with this two-night engagement at home.
